Best way to treat an old wooden rocking chair? Paint or coat? Lacquer is worn off down to the bare w
It look like it's lacquer or coating is mostly worn off, down to the bare wood.

If it is an antique you will hurt the value if you do more than clean it with something like Murphy's Oil Soap.

If it is not and you like the wood, sand down and re-varnish. Or even if you paint it, sand down first, doesn't have to be all the way to the wood, but take off the rough edges and the sanding gives the chair's surface some "tooth" for the new coating to grab onto. Be sure and make all brushstrokes with the grain of the wood.
