Check your local yellow pages for "party equipment and supplies, rental". If you can't rent them locally then the cheap plastic chairs they sell at places like Pamida or WalMart are probably your best bet. They would cost you less to buy than two-way shipping of rental chairs.

Bert
rent them.
EASY try looking up Rentals in the yellow pages or go to the lumber yard...Home depot ect and buy 2x12 lumber at different lengths
Two friends of mine recently got married to eachother and had an outdoor wedding reception. They rented chairs from a rental place. You should be able to find one near you in the yellow pages. I'm sure rates vary, but the rate my friends got my chairs at was a steal! Only 50 cents per chair! Cheap, and much better than buying them.
OK, this may sound odd, but during a tight budget time, I happened to remember that a local funeral parlor offered "loaner" chairs. I borrowed chairs from them for several years, whenever I had my annual family party. Everyone thought it was ingenious, but I was being practical.

If you choose to try this, I wouldn't mention the chairs' origin to the children.
Have fun!
The easiest and cheapest thing to do is have a picnic. It can be done inside or outside. Spread out mats, tablecloths, towels - anything. All the kids can sit on the floor. 6 yr olds love this kind of thing. Use your big Rubbermaid tubs as "tables" if you like (or at least just for drinks).

This means that you will have to serve picnic friendly fare - no spaghetti or soup.
